Travel to Charlottesville

The University of Virginia is located in the city of Charlottesville, in the center of the state. There are many transportation options-regional, national, and international. Please see the university website here, where you will find links to air and rail options as well as driving directions:

Please note, national and international travel to the Charlottesville airport might be easier and more economical than you imagine. Just search from your point of origin to CHO as a destination. There are excellent connections through Washington/Dulles, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Chicago. The additional leg from these hubs can sometimes be less expensive and more time-efficient than other options.

Central Virginia also offers many options for tourism and vacation, and is within a short drive of several National Parks, including Shenendoah, as well as Civil War battlefields. It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Washington, D.C. and about an hour from Richmond (the former capital of the Confederate States).

MSA Travel Grants

As previously announced, the Memory Studies Association will provide a limited amount of travel grants to conference participants. We are aware of the fact that travel costs and accommodation fees are steep, so we hope to be able to offer some support in this regard. However, these travel grants will not fully cover travel expenses but are contributions to these costs. Low-income applications (graduate students, early career scholars, scholars from low-income countries) will be prioritized. Please note that we can only reimburse you after the conference.

Are you interested in applying for a travel grant? Please send a short letter explaining your motivation and need (not more than 750 words) to
conference[a]memorystudiesassociation.org no later than March 1st, 2020. This letter should outline your current professional situation and a short overview of your expected costs. If your participation in this conference is depending on receiving such a grant, please note this in your application as well.
