MSA Travel Grants

As previously announced, the Memory Studies Association will provide a limited amount of travel grants to conference participants. We are aware of the fact that travel costs and accommodation fees are steep, so we hope to be able to offer some support in this regard. However, these travel grants will not fully cover travel expenses but are contributions to these costs. Low-income applications (graduate students, early career scholars, scholars from low-income countries) will be prioritized. Please note that we can only reimburse you after the conference.

Are you interested in applying for a travel grant? Please send a short letter explaining your motivation and need (not more than 750 words) to
conference[a]memorystudiesassociation.org no later than March 1st, 2020. This letter should outline your current professional situation and a short overview of your expected costs. If your participation in this conference is depending on receiving such a grant, please note this in your application as well.

On-Grounds Dorm Accommodations (limited availability - room registration opens on February 14th):

The University of Virginia is pleased to offer a limited number of single occupancy dorm rooms to accommodate attendees of the MSA 2020 Conference. Registration for these dorm rooms will be available on at 9am EST on Friday February 14, 2020, and rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis. Registration for this accommodation option will be available beginning February 14, 2020. Please click here to book a dorm.

For those looking for an affordable alternative to a hotel, these student-style accommodations are located in our first-year residence buildings. These air-conditioned rooms traditionally house two undergraduates during the academic year, but are offered as single-occupancy private rooms to MSA guests. It is important to note that this is not a hotel, but an economical, no-frills lodging option within a 20-minute walk to Central Grounds conference locations. Guests will be housed in suites or halls with other conference attendees of the same gender and will share bathroom facilities with those guests as well. All rooms are hall-style or suite-style, with shared bathrooms, lofted single beds, desks, dressers, and wardrobes. The lofted beds are not ideal for everyone, so please consider this as you reserve these accommodations. Each guest will receive a linen package that includes a bed pillow, pillow case, two sheets, a blanket, two bath towels, a washcloth, and a bath mat. Guests are responsible for making their own beds. Rooms are not equipped with hangers, irons or ironing boards, hair dryers, or area lamps (overhead lighting only). Guests are responsible for supplying those amenities as needed, as well as personal toiletry items including shampoo, soap, etc. While all of our residence halls are accessible, there are a limited number of ADA parking spaces near the dorms, and most guest parking is NOT immediately adjacent to the accessible entrances of the buildings. It takes approximately 15 minutes to walk from the Alderman Road Residence Area to Newcomb Hall where the conference takes place.

Rooms we be available to guests beginning Wednesday, June 17 through Monday 22, 2020.  Check-in takes place after 2:00 p.m. on the date you arrive, and all guests must check out no later than 11:00 a.m. on June 22nd.
